COMMUNITY POSTPARTUM PROGRAM
COMMUNITY POSTPARTUM PROGRAM
We are sad to announce that we will no longer be taking applications for pregnancy and birth care from March 2024 and on wards. We are transitioning to only providing postpartum care for families that feel they may need some extra support during the first 6 weeks after baby is born. Our postpartum program offers home visits, flexible scheduling, and clinical care and education about the fourth trimester. Our program is covered by MSP and is eligible to anyone with active MSP and who may have given birth with a doctor, and is wanting more support. We will not be providing any pregnancy or birth care at this time.
Midwives provide family-centred care. Our program is covered by your BC CareCard and will work in conjunction with your delivering provider.
The goal of the Community Postpartum Program is to provide high quality, community-based postpartum support through regular home visits in the first weeks of new parenthood for families looking for a little extra support. Visits include well-woman and newborn care along with close breastfeeding support from Registered Midwives.
POSTPARTUM CARE
Postpartum care (care after the birth) with midwives continues for six weeks. During this time there are scheduled appointments with your midwife at your home and/or in hospital – you can also page anytime with urgent concerns or questions.
During postpartum visits, we will:
Assess the health and progress of you and your baby
Assist with any breastfeeding difficulties and make a referral to a lactation consultant if needed
Weigh the baby
Offer or refer for routine newborn tests (Jaundice screening, Newborn Metabolic Screen, Hearing test)
Provide advice on normal newborn care and development
Discuss the physical changes you can expect after the birth
Routine postpartum tests, like Pap test, etc
If you are interested in becoming a postpartum client, please fill out our application form. We accept referrals from both families and health care providers. Please be aware that we often have wait lists and space is limited. We take a limited number of clients each month and encourage families to apply for care early to ensure they get a spot.
